History
The most known attraction in Cheung Chau, the Cheung Po Tsai cave has one of the most intriguing histories of all Hong Kong islands: There was a pirate named Cheung, he was portrayed as a robin hood in Hong Kong. His Father was a Tanka, which is a person that lives on junks in Coastal Canyon. Though unfortunately he got kidnapped by the pirate “ Cheung” Then was raised as their own son. After he tried to follow and be like his adopted parents which made him in charge of the Pirating business, which he also had around 600 ships. Later his partner “ Cai Qian” died because of the Chinese government since they forced him to surrender and give up. The government forced Cheung to tell him where the hide out was and it was apparently in the Cheung Po Tsai cave in Cheung Chau so they say that in the cave there are hidden treasures also known as the Treasure trove hidden inside the cave. (which sadly we couldn't find)
In Cheung Chau, there’s a well known annual festival called the “Bun Festival”, this festival is a festival for villagers that hold and celebrate great peace. It is believed that the villagers asked the gods for help when pirates and diseases tried to eliminate them. The villagers built an Altar that was in front of the “Pak Tai Temple”, they built it to try and scare the dark and evil spirits away. They searched through the narrow of the village parading a black wooden statue of the tempe on a steden chair so that it could help lower plagues year after year as they believed it would bring more luck to the island. Years later from when the plague ended, there were lots of rituals added and one of them called the “ Bun Scrambling Competition” After the bun festival they would always have a competition where men had to climb long towers made from bamboo which the bamboo towers were covered in buns and they all had to try and collect as many buns as possible. The buns were very special because they had the chinese character “Peace” on it which meant good luck. In the bun festivals you would also see other activities known as: balancing on poles and lion dances . You would also see lots of people dressed up in beautiful dresses and clothes but the bun scrambling competition is the most popular. |
